Ada 2 jenis participle:

1. Present participles (V-ing)

2. Past participles. (Verb 3)

  • Present participle ato sering juga disebut active participle selalu berakhiran -ing.

Ex : doing, taking, writing

  • Past participle berakhiran -ed,kecuali yang memiliki bentuk irregular (tidak beraturan)

Ex : done, taken, written dll

Contoh participle,

  1. It was an exhausting work. (present participle)
  2. The exhausted workers were too tired after working. (past participle)
  • Pada kalimat pertama “It was an exhausting work.” Berarti pekerjaan yang melelahkan.
  • Pada kalimat kedua “The exhausted workers were too tired after working.” Berarti para pekerja yang kelelahan.

Participles pada adjective clause

Contoh

  • The man calling me was Mr. Jones. (present participle; “who called”)
  • The man called was me. (past participle“who was called”)


1.    Present participles pada adjective clause yang memiliki kata kerja aktif (active verbs).

Ex :  Andreas company, which joined this association in 2009, became the twenty-first member.

  • Andreas company, joining this association in 2009, became the twenty-first member.
  • Joining this association in 2009, Andreas company became the twenty-first member.

2. Past participles pada adjective clauses yang menggunakan kata kerja pasif (passive verbs).

Ex : The company, which was founded in 2005, got high profit at the first year.

  • The company, founded in 2005, got high profit at the first year.
  • Founded in 2005, the company got high profit at the first year.


Contoh soal,

The shop sells some tools ________ to fix our machine.

(A) needed

(B) are needed

(C) which need

(D) needing

Jawaban yang bener (A).

Kan kalimat aslinya :

The shop sells some tools which are needed to fix our machine.

“Which are” nya dihilangkan, maka jadi;

The shop sells some tools needed to fix our machine.
